Most Common Questions Before Your First Class

Beginners
Do I need to be in shape to start?
No. You get in shape by training — not before. Every class at Panza is all-levels, and you will go at your own pace. Plenty of students started with no athletic background. If you are waiting until you are “ready,” you will never start.
Will I get hurt?
Jiu-Jitsu is a contact sport, but it is designed around controlled practice. You tap, your partner stops — that is the fundamental rule. Beginners are paired with experienced students who know how to keep things safe. Coach Panza maintains a culture where ego stays off the mat.
What do I wear?
For your first class: athletic clothes (t-shirt and shorts or athletic pants). We have loaner gis available for trial students. If you continue, you will need a gi (traditional uniform) for gi classes and a rash guard with shorts for no-gi classes.
How often should I train?
Start with 2-3 classes per week. That is enough to build a foundation and see real progress. As your body adapts and your schedule allows, you can add more sessions. Consistency matters more than volume — three classes a week for six months beats five classes a week for one month.
Kids & Parents
What age groups do you have?
Panza offers dedicated Kids BJJ classes for children, as well as No-Gi Teens classes for older kids. The full kids and teens schedule: Kids BJJ Monday-Thursday at 4:00 PM and Saturday at 10:00 AM, No-Gi Teens Monday & Wednesday at 6:30 PM. View the full schedule.
Is it safe for my child?
Yes. Classes are structured, supervised, and taught by instructors who specialize in working with children. Luiz and Camila Panza run the kids program together and are praised by parents for their patience and ability to connect with kids of all ages. The mats are cleaned regularly, and safety is built into every drill and activity.
Will BJJ help with bullying?
Jiu-Jitsu builds confidence, discipline, and the ability to stay calm under pressure — all of which change how a child carries themselves. Kids who train learn de-escalation skills alongside physical self-defense. They do not learn to start fights; they learn they do not need to be afraid.
What does a kids class look like?
A typical kids class includes: fun warm-up movement drills that build coordination, age-appropriate technique instruction through games and structured drills, partner drilling to practice what was taught, and partner drilling where kids apply techniques in a safe setting.
Logistics
What is the schedule?
Panza offers classes six days a week across gi, no-gi, kids, and teens programs. View the complete schedule with all class times and types.
How much does it cost?
Flexible membership options are available depending on your training goals. Book a free class and we will walk you through everything — pricing, programs, and what makes sense for your schedule.
Where do I park?
Free parking is available at the rear of the building. The academy is located at 3810 Pacific Coast Hwy, Ste 103, Torrance, CA 90505, near the intersection of Hawthorne Blvd and PCH — easy to reach from anywhere in the South Bay. Get directions.
Do I need a gi?
For gi classes, yes — a gi is required. For no-gi classes, you wear a rash guard and shorts. If you are coming for your first trial class, athletic clothes are fine — we have loaner gis available.
How does the free trial work?
Book your class online, show up at the scheduled time, and we take care of the rest. You do not need any gear or prior experience. An instructor will meet you, walk you through the basics, and pair you with an experienced training partner.
Can I just drop in?
Yes — but we recommend booking online so we can pair you with the right class and have an instructor ready to welcome you. Check the schedule for class times.
Training
How intense is the training?
Every class at Panza is all-levels. Beginners train alongside experienced students in a controlled environment. You set your own pace, and the intensity scales with your experience. Coach Panza adjusts the training to meet you where you are.
What is the difference between gi and no-gi?
Gi: You train in a traditional uniform that your opponent can grip, adding a layer of strategy. Gi training tends to be more methodical. No-Gi: You train in a rash guard and shorts — the pace is faster with more wrestling, body locks, and leg attacks. Both are valuable. Panza offers dedicated gi classes and no-gi classes throughout the week.
